Applications
PMD is a dynamically varying effect in optical fibers and components that leads to Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). The induced ISI penalty resulting from PMD is related to the bit period (hence bit rate) and therefore the impact of PMD is more severe for 40Gbps versus 10Gbps DWDM systems. PMD is a particular problem for older fiber plant manufactured before 1995. Since then, fiber manufacturing and cabling processes have improved and PMD has been minimized, enabling 40Gbps propagation without PMD limitations.
To maximize the TAM for 40Gbps and enable carriers to deploy 40Gbps on older fiber plant, StrataLight has developed the OTS-4540 PMDCM. This can be deployed on a selective basis with any standard OTS-4000 line card to increase the mean DGD tolerance to 8ps. This enables 40Gbps deployments using 10Gbps link engineering rules for PMD. The selective deployment of per channel PMDCs on a per route basis has been shown to offer the most compelling PMD mitigation economics.
The OTS-4540 is an optical PMDC that adaptively tracks dynamic changes in both SOP and DGD in a ms timeframe. The link PMD statistics not only vary due to thermal effects, but environmental effects such as railroad vibration for buried fiber and wind buffeting of aerial fiber can also induce very rapid changes in the PMD statistics. The OTS-4540 is designed to adaptively track the fastest changes in field PMD statistics. It can endlessly track any variation in fiber SOP or Principal States of Polarization (PSP), thereby guaranteeing reset-free, hitless operation for any trajectory across the Poincare sphere.
Full control and monitoring of the OTS-4540 PMDCM is provided via the OS-4000 management software
